Team TriLife Invades Great White North Half Ironman!

Who knew that team clothing would make us the most noticed team at the race!  Not only were we the loudest ,most supportive group out there, but we looked the best, bar none!

As a coach, I can’t begin to tell you the joy I felt watching our little TriLife Team be so big.  All athletes in orange and purple gave their heart and souls to this race and the results prove my statement.

Terry Toma, just one month out of radiation treatment for cancer, completed her second GWN Half Ironman and is on her way to Ironman Canada.  Everyone has wondered if she could do it... she proved she could, and she will see the finish line on August 26th in Penticton.

Michelle R. lost her Mom after a long illness just last week.  She chose to race, had a gigantic PR, and carried her Mom on her shoulder from start to finish.

Kerry had terrible stomach problems throughout the day but toughed it out to get to that darn finish line!

Joanne Z. wondered if she could make the bike cut off.  She did, and she is now a Half Ironman finisher.

So many stories, so much heart... for more take a look at the forum for Team Tri Life race reports.  Below are some of the highlights.

PLUS:  Congratulations to first timers who exceeded their expectations:

Rena, Cynthia, Jenn, and Caroline...WAY TO GO GIRLS!  You did it!

July 07th 2007 Okotoks Sprint Tri

Sandy pulled herself together after a bit of a panic attack in the swim to go on and really race this sprint tri though the bike and run.  She had a great day and is looking forward to her next race and Olympic Distance in Salmon Arm.

July 15th 2007 Coral Springs Tri

Team TriLife was well represented at this inaugral sprint distance tri in Calgary.  Alfred and Shannon both got through their first open water swims to complete races that will build their knowledge and experience of racing a triathlon.  Karen completed her second sprint tri of the season and place 4th in her AG... although she was racing as Terry so results don’t show that! Way to go team!

Daniela is our Vancouver athlete who many on the team don’t know!  Daniela has had an outstanding year of racing and training. Recently she raced in her second OD of the year in the Squamish Memorial Triathlon.  Previous to that she PR’d her half mary, and also did tri’s in Sydney Victoria, and in the pouring rain at UBC earlier in the season.

July 8th 2007  Calgary HSBC Road Races

Congratulations to 3 Team TriLife athletes who raced close to home in Calgary this weekend.  Gillian used this as a training race to prepare for her upcoming half mary in Edmonton and was close to her PR.  Brenda had a great 10k  and 4th in her AG with support from her daughter, another Team TriLife athlete Rena, who ran along with her.   Sue had a steady effort in her  half marathon which was fantastic considering her last minute decision to do the race.

June 24th: Danielle

literally took the plunge and dove into the ITU BG Triathlon in Edmonton.  She needed a race to get experience leading up to Sylvan Lake Half Ironman, and this one fit in her schedule. It was a day for identifying strengths and areas to work on.  Fantastic results from a last minute event.

July 21st, 2007 Sylvan Lake Half Ironman

What a day!  Team TriLife was flying in our orange and purple gear, and the day was filled with moments of amazement and awe for this coach.

  • Marcelo and Jenn both had challenging work days leading right up to this race.  They weren’t able to get off their feet at all, and despite this they both raced well.
  • Seeing Marcelo pump his arms in the air on the run, and again at the finish line was extraordinary.  He had good reason to celebrate as this was a Half Ironman PR for Marcelo by 4 minutes!  WAY TO GO!
  • Jenn had fun at GWN, but today she learned that Half Ironman races aren’t always “ fun”!  She didn’t have an easy day, but she overcame adversity and got to the finish line with a smile!
  • Danielle decided to do this race as a training day to test the waters for Half Iron Distance.  Her goal was to have fun and pace well throughout the day.  Mission accomplished!  She felt great all day, and was able to run fast and focused to the finish line. She exceeded her expectations on her bike, and is stoked to get to the start line at the Kelowna Apple!
  • Susi... well... Susi has dealt with stomach issues all season. This was the race to nail her nutrition and pacing for Ironman.  She got her job done, finished strong and smiling, AND... SHE PR’D HER HALF IRONMAN RUN SPLIT ON A REALLY TOUGH COURSE!  Can you say “WOW”!
  • Trish and was steady thoughout  the day.  Her comments at the finish line were that this was a better race than Stony, even though the clock didn’t match the statement. I was extremely proud of her for recognizing the reward in doing a race well.  The same sentiment applies to Kerry.
  • Kerry had some pretty big gut issues at GWN Half Ironman.  We worked closely together in the weeks leading up to the race to put a plan in place to combat the issues.  All I can say is that Kerry’s smile has been in my head since the finish line. His day was far from perfect, but his work in executing his race plan was outstanding!
  • Cynthia... how do I talk about being the coach / draft marshal who gave her athlete a drafting penalty!  Thank you for forgiving and understanding AND for seeing it as a learning experience!  (We were able to laugh about it quickly after the race!)  Cynthia’s plan was to race at IM pace and finish feeling good!  Apart from a rolled ankle on the course, mission accomplished!
  • Janet had a goal to beat her time from last year by 42 minutes.  A gigantic goal in the eyes of most athletes AND coaches!  Janet smashed her goal and had the race of her life!  She PR’d this course by 1:12, and she raced hard from the start to the finish line.  Last year was for fun, this year was to see what she could do.  The training and hard work paid off, and her 4th place AG finish and PR prove that!  Way to go Janet!

Finally, a few other athletes who aren’t on our team deserve mention. To the fellow with gout... if you ever look at this website I hope you’ll know that I admire your perseverance for getting to the finish line when you were so close to quitting.  The human spirit is so strong, and to go from walking with a cane 2 days prior to the race, to making it to the finish line... wow!  You are a triathlete.

J-Force... This is a group of individuals who got dressed up in team clothing to celebrate a life cut short by a terrible accident last summer.  Jason (J) was a triathlete and ski coach who impacted many during his much to short life.  On the course yesterday people who love J were out in force to celebrate his life.  Seeing his hat cross the finish line on his girlfriend Annabell was a huge moment for me, as was seeing the rest of the team racing in his honor.  It was a fitting tribute.
